The opportunity of movement versus the opportunity of health

Date

How will you connect with the fitness industry this year; through movement or health?

I believe the choice you make can directly affect the results you achieve.

Never before in the history of humankind have we known more about movement – examples include the biomechanics of movement, the calorie burning effects of movement, the aerobic benefits of movement – the lists and studies go on and on.

Add to increased knowledge about movement the increased opportunities for movement, as we see the fitness industry continuing to grow with boom numbers of fitness centres, personal training studios, new and improved fitness programs, community programs, corporate health programs, etc.

However, whilst our knowledge about and opportunity for movement has grown, so to have our lifestyle-created health issues and, although awareness of this has increased, the fitness industry market penetration has remained stagnant for years on end.

Why?

January is a time for reflection; the rush of the Christmas period is behind us and it is time to prepare for the year ahead. Health, fitness and exercise tend to be a big part of this process and marketers know the motivation for change in these areas of our lives is high. So we are bombarded with miracle new programs, deals of a lifetime and guaranteed success.

You want to get leaner, fitter, stronger……

To do this you have got to make changes…

     You want change today, right?

Well you must make a decision now, sign here……

This year take a breath…

Remember what happened last year when you signed up to the latest fitness miracle (at an amazing price) ready for the transformation and the new you?

What happened? Are you where you want to be?

This year take a breath…

Look at the opportunities change will bring rather than the negatives about the changes you need to make. Match the decisions and pathway you take to these opportunities and your reason for change.

By connecting to a health and fitness pathway which matches your reason for change (i.e. it matches your lifestyle, it is appropriate for any injuries or health conditions and it is right for you) you increase your chances of success.

The reason is you have matched your pathway to the positivity of change and the possibilities change can bring.

You have started your journey through engagement…

When you choose a pathway which is not appropriate for you but because it is the best deal or the latest trend or offers the latest greatest fastest results, you diminish your chances of success.

The reason is you have chosen a pathway based on a connection to a product choice that is linked to the negative changes you believe you need to make, not linked to you.

You have started your journey disengaged from you and your choices.

But wait; isn’t all movement and exercise good for me?

If exercise were a drug it would be the most prescribed medication in the world, because of the benefits it can have to our health. The key word in this statement is prescribed.

When we are unwell and require medication, we don’t just walk into the pharmacy and take any packet of tablets off the shelf. This because we know there is not one prescription that can fix all that ails us. We know we need to seek advice, explain our symptoms, talk to somebody about the side effects, look at other medications we are taking, look at our past history and make sure the medication matches our illness and also our body. It is commonsense right?

It is commonsense that you ask questions about the appropriateness of the movement of choice for you: your body, your health, your goals, your lifestyle and your personality.

It is commonsense that your movement of choice has built-in support that keeps you on track and brings you back when needed.

It is commonsense that the provider of your movement of choice asks questions about you:  your body, your health, your goals, your lifestyle and your personality.

It is commonsense that you ask questions of the provider regarding qualifications, their network of support (e.g. allied health support), their experience, their use of products, that the program is balanced and the reason behind the choices they recommend for you.

It is commonsense that if all these things don’t match, the provider recommends a pathway which is more appropriate for you.

It is commonsense right?

Make sure your movement of choice this year matches the opportunities of health you wish to create.
